This Design was made by Fatima.
In this village, about fifteen women were producing ceramics in the early 1980s. Today Fatima is the only one still working. Fatima learned the craft out of necessity. Fatima has more than ten children. None of her five daughters wanted to learn pottery. Fatima’s husband is a shepherd.
Outside despite the overwhelming heat that prevails during summer, she decorates these pieces sitting on the floor with no comfort and very little material.
During spring, Fatima makes smokers and beehives. She also produces pieces like mejmars (barbecue) for the sheep festival in September.
Variation is to be expected, each piece differs in colour, size, shape and decorations due to its handmade nature. Sumano is about simplicity, imperfections, and embracing the “flaws”.
Each piece is fired in an open fire, which makes unexpected and surprising results, including smoke marks on some pieces. This means that each piece is one of a kind and cannot be duplicated.
