This Sumano plate design was made by Houda.

In two villages located two kilometers from each other, about fifteen women potters were still active in the 1980s. Today there are two: Naïma and Houda.

Houda started working as a potter in order to help her parents who just bought land. On their land, they have olive trees and cattle. Her two sisters assist her in her job, helping her pick up clay in the mountains and cow dung to prepare the fuel for the in-ground kiln.

Although Houda learned the craft out of necessity, she is actually very passionate about it. She likes to mix tradition and modernity, combining the motives of her tribe with new shapes and designs.

Variation is to be expected, each piece differs in colour, size, shape and decorations due to its handmade nature. Sumano is about simplicity, imperfections, and embracing the “flaws”.

Each piece is fired in an open fire, which makes unexpected and surprising results, including smoke marks on some pieces. This means that each piece is one of a kind and cannot be duplicated.
